The Interconnected Magmatic Plumbing System of the Natron Rift

Understanding the magmatic plumbing system of rift volcanoes is essential when examining interplay between and tectonic forces. Recent seismicity, volcanic activity, magma emplacement, volatile release make Natron basin ideal location to study these processes in East African Rift System. Here, we present first high-resolution tomographic imaging Oldoinyo Lengai volcano surrounding systems using attenuation mapping. High scattering absorption features reveal fluid-filled fracture networks below regions at surface a close spatial association carbonatite volcanism deeply penetrating, faults. High-absorption appear sensitive fluids thermal gradients, revealing central sill complex connected down mid-crust, which links segments across developing rift.
